Abstract
Background: The incidence of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is accelerating, posing serious consequences on patients and families. A resolution is enhancing the knowledge of CVA for the community, especially caregivers of stroke patients. Objectives: Determine the rate of stroke patients’ caregivers, who have knowledge of CVA and related factors. Subjects and methods: This cross-sectional study was done at Military Hospital 175, using a self-administered questionnaire on 350 caregivers of CVA patients aged 18-60 years. Results: The proportion of caregivers with correct total knowledge of CVA was 46%. 75.1% of subjects have correct practice when facing CVA patients. There were correlations between knowledge of CVA and demographics: Age group, place of residence, and occupation of caregivers. Conclusions: The proportion of subjects with correct knowledge was still low yet the correct practice rate was high. Subjects with good total knowledge included the group of caregivers aged 18-50 years, living in HCM City or intellectual workers.
