Clinical characteristics, electroencephalographic findings and brain magnetic resonance imaging in patients with frontal lobe epilepsy

Abstract

Objective: To describe clinical characteristics, interictal electroencephalographic findings, and brain magnetic resonance imaging features in patients with frontal lobe epilepsy. Subjects and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study included 32 patients treated at the Neurology Center, Viet Duc University Hospital, from July 2025 to July 2026. Results: Mean age at seizure onset was 17.3 ± 11.7 years; the 10-19-year group was most frequent (37.5%). Weekly seizures occurred in 40.6%; 84.4% lasted no longer than 2 minutes, and 93.8% occurred at night or during both daytime and nighttime. Common manifestations were focal jerking (28.1%), tonic limb posturing (25.0%), and eye/head version (18.8%). Brain magnetic resonance imaging and interictal electroencephalography were abnormal in 65.6% each. Among abnormal electroencephalograms, unilateral hemispheric abnormalities accounted for 38.1% and frontal abnormalities for 28.6%. Conclusion: Frontal lobe epilepsy showed heterogeneous manifestations, with brief, frequent, predominantly motor seizures and a marked nocturnal tendency. Magnetic resonance imaging and interictal electroencephalographic abnormalities were found in approximately two-thirds of patients.
