Abstract
Background: Amitriptyline is considered one of the medications with the strongest evidence for the treatment of chronic tension-type headache. However, its use is limited by adverse effects. Topiramate, which reduces central nervous system pain sensitization and has a relatively favorable safety profile, is considered a potential option for prophylactic treatment. Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics and related factors, and to evaluate the prophylactic efficacy of Topiramate in patients with chronic tension-type headache attending the Neurology Clinic of Nam Can Tho University Medical Center. Methods: A descriptive case series study was conducted on 18 patients with chronic tension-type headache who were treated with Topiramate for 12 weeks. Result: Eighteen patients with chronic tension-type headache were enrolled, of whom 72.2% were female. The most common age group was 31-40 years. Headache was predominantly bilateral, most frequently involving the frontal and temporal regions, and anxiety was the most common associated symptom. After 12 weeks of Topiramate treatment, 17 patients achieved complete remission, while 1 patient was classified as treatment failure. No adverse effects of Topiramate were observed.
