Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of seizures, brain magnetic resonance imaging findings, and electroencephalographic features in patients with cerebral venous thrombosis presenting with seizures. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 47 patients with confirmed cerebral venous thrombosis and seizures who were treated at the Neurology Institute, Bach Mai Hospital, from July 2024 to May 2026. The mean age of the patients was 45.17 ± 17.24 years, and females accounted for 53.2% of the cohort. Seizure was the most common initial symptom, observed in 51.1% of patients, followed by headache in 31.9%. The first seizure occurred mainly within 7 days of diagnosis, accounting for 95.7% of cases. Generalized seizures were the most common seizure type, accounting for 42.6%. On magnetic resonance imaging, thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus was the most frequent finding, observed in 80.9% of patients, followed by cortical vein thrombosis in 59.6%. The most common parenchymal lesions were intracerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarction, accounting for 38.3% and 36.2%, respectively. Electroencephalographic abnormalities were detected in 76.6% of patients, predominantly delta and theta waves. These findings suggest that seizures in cerebral venous thrombosis tend to occur early and are frequently associated with parenchymal brain lesions and electroencephalographic abnormalities.
