Abstract

Background: Each year, Vietnam records an additional 200,000 new stroke cases. Post-stroke depression is a significant issue in stroke management. Numerous studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding the association between infarct location and the frequency of depression onset. Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of depression and its association with cerebral infarction location in patients with ischemic stroke at Military Hospital 175. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 81 patients with first-ever ischemic stroke treated at Military Hospital 175 from September 2020 to April 2021. Depression was diagnosed according to DSM-V criteria and classified in severity using the PHQ-9 scale. Results: The 71–80 age group had the highest prevalence of post-stroke depression. The male-to-female ratio of ischemic stroke was 1.45:1. Post-stroke depression was present in 40.7% of patients, predominantly mild depression (24.69%), followed by moderate depression (12.35%) and severe depression (3.7%). Infarctions located in the thalamus, temporal lobe, and frontal lobe had the highest rates of depression onset, at 42.86%, 40%, and 20%, respectively. No significant association was found between post-stroke depression and either sex or infarct location. Conclusion: The prevalence of depression among patients with ischemic stroke was 40.7%. The location of the ischemic lesion was not found to be a risk factor for depression.
