Abstract
This review discusses the relationship between epilepsy and psychiatric disorders, emphasizing the role of psychiatrists in the comprehensive management of patients with epilepsy. Common psychiatric comorbidities include psychosis, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, behavioral disorders, personality disorders, and psychiatric disorders in children with epilepsy. The article reviews the underlying mechanisms, principles of selecting antiseizure medications and psychotropic drugs, and strategies to optimize treatment while minimizing drug interactions and adverse effects. It also highlights the psychosocial burden of epilepsy and the importance of community-based mental health programs in the long-term management of patients with epilepsy.
